Pca Recognizes Public Officials For Concrete-Based Sustainable Development

PCA announced a Call for Entries for its 2010 Sustainable Leadership Awards and named 2009 program honorees. Recognizing public officials who incorporate concrete and cement-based products in sustainability-promoting policies and projects, the Sustainable Leadership Awards were initiated by PCA in 2008 to heighten state and local decision makersÌ awareness of long-term, positive impacts on the community and environment of concrete infrastructure and building construction. Accordingly, awards are granted to pubic officials in four categories: Leadership in Sustainability Policy, Homes and Residential Building, Non-Residential Building, and Infrastructure.

To be eligible for 2010 Sustainable Leadership Awards, construction and planning activities must have occurred between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009. The deadline to submit final entries is May 3, 2010. The nomination form is available at www.cement.org

2009 Sustainable Leadership Awards recipients include:

Leadership in Sustainability Policy
Coweta County, Ga.: County Engineer Wayne Kennedy for use of full-depth reclamation with cement in road construction.

Camp Rapid, S.D.: Engineering Manager Dale Ludens for use of pervious concrete in parking lot construction.

Fairfield County, S.C.: Transportation Committee Chairman James McGraw for use of full-depth reclamation with cement in road construction.

Homes and Residential Building Projects
Philadelphia, Pa.: Mayor Michael Nutter for use of insulated concrete forms in home building.

Non-Residential Building Projects
Highland, Calif.: The City of Highland for use of insulated concrete forms in public library construction.

Infrastructure Projects
Queen Anne’s County, Md.: Queen Anne’s County Board of Commissioners recognized for use of pervious concrete in parking lot construction.
