Crews have installed twin rows of six vertical wind turbines at the recently opened Greenway Self Park near downtown Chicago (Photo Gallery here). Built of J.W. Peters prestressed double tee and Lombard Precast/ATMI architectural members, the structure sports a deep schedule of green building and sustainability features–warranting developer Friedman PropertiesÌ apparent pursuit of design and concept patents. Located in the River North neighborhood just above Chicago’s Loop, the 725-car facility also marks potentially the first commercial building application of the Helix Wind Corp. S594 Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, whose helical, aluminum alloy rotors are about 4 ft. in diameter and 16 ft. high. In late 2009, San Diego-based Helix Wind delivered a smaller model (S332) turbine to help power a Chicago architect’s renovated home, office and studio.
