From Portland Cement Association ÷ South Carolina Department of Transportation logged the first major application of diamond ground roller compacted concrete for mainline highway pavement. Looking to replace failed asphalt on a four-lane U.S. Highway in Aiken, SCDOT opted for a 10-in. RCC slab along a one-mile stretch with a 45 mph speed limit and average daily traffic of 6,000 vehicles. Traffic control measures were implemented to maintain at least one lane in each direction open for traffic at all times. To provide the desired ride quality for high-speed traffic, SCDOT specified diamond grinding in lieu of an asphalt wear course. Contractor Morgan Corp. of Spartanburg, S.C., placed about 8,000 yd. of the RCC mix.
