Secretary of State Hillary Clinton joined European dignitaries in Germany’s capital to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Approximately 14 feet high, the notorious 96-mile wall–more than 60 miles of which were cast-in-place concrete–divided the German capital and symbolized the country’s East-West Cold War split. On the evening of Nov. 9, 1989, hammer-wielding East Germans began their country’s reunification with West Germany through celebratory demolition of the graffiti-laden concrete structure. Their actions came nearly 30 months after President Ronald Reagan, speaking from Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, challenged Soviet counterpart Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down this wall.
