Among landmark achievements of the New World Home is certification by the U.S. Green Building Council as Georgia’s first Platinum LEED [Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design] factory-built home, as well as the first Platinum LEED home of any type in Georgia designed without need for renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, wind turbines or geothermal systems. Features contributing to the project’s LEED for Homes Platinum certification include an insulated, moisture-resistant precast foundation that reduces potential for growth of mold and mildew, plus maintenance-free, fiber-cement siding, offering rot-, flame-, and insect-resistant exterior surfaces.
Additionally, the New World Home project Û located in East Cobb County Û earned EarthCraft Gold certification, as well as the National Association of Home Builders’ National Green Building Certification Gold. Its trademarked New Old Green Modular (NOGM) design platform incorporates a holistic approach to historically inspired green building, the company notes, resulting in homes constructed to exacting standards in less than 100 days. NOGM homes reportedly are distinguished from conventional modular structures by two primary features: (1) their design is historically inspired while integrating modern conveniences and amenities; and, (2) a Îwhole systems’ approach incorporates stringent Îgreen’ standards in building practices and product selection.
Bringing green design to the highest level, affirms Mark Jupiter, New World Home cofounder and Product Division president, this home reflects our mission to provide traditional-style houses that incorporate a Îwhole systems’ approach, resulting in a minimum 50 percent energy savings annually, reduced water consumption by thousands of gallons a year, a nontoxic indoor environment, and thousands of dollars a year in maintenance-cost savings, starting from day one Û without an array of solar panels on the roof or a wind turbine in the backyard.
The homes are built with lumber from sustainably harvested forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and incorporate ultra-efficient HVAC systems, as well as low- or no-VOC [volatile organic compound] paints, adhesives and finishes. In addition to a precast foundation and fiber-cement siding, NOGM standard features include:
- Spray-foam insulated walls and rafters, creating an air-tight thermal envelope
- Low-E, argon-filled, dual-pane, energy-efficient windows that reduce air leakage
- Watersense fixtures, home-run plumbing, and a tankless water heater that reduces annual water usage by 40 percent
- Framing techniques that significantly reduce waste and thermal-bridging energy loss
- Non-added formaldehyde cabinets, floors and trim
- Energy Star-rated doors, windows, roof, ceiling fans and appliances
