Among changes announced by Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) to be reflected in its updated Fall 2009 Construction Documents Technology Certificate exam are added topics in the Fundamentals category, including building information modeling (BIM), integrated project delivery (IPD), and green building, i.e., GreenFormat and sustainability. The CDT Certificate program offers a comprehensive overview for professionals, such as architects, engineers, contractors, contract administrators, material suppliers and manufacturers’ representatives, who write, interpret, enforce or manage construction documents. For 20-plus years, CDT certification has provided a valuable credential demonstrating knowledge and understanding of construction documents and project lifecycle, CSI officials note.

While the changes represent a small portion of the CDT exam, explains CSI Executive Director and CEO Walter Marlowe, those updates will help ensure that the CDT credential continues to be held in high regard by the industry. To maintain the program’s high standard of quality, CSI and testing and assessment provider Prometric conducted an analysis of the CDT Certificate exam to evaluate its relevance to the comprehensive knowledge and skills needed to write and manage construction documents. Test specifications [weighted content areas] have been updated to more accurately describe the knowledge being tested.

The analysis produced information that will help CSI develop better exam preparatory materials. The fall 2009 exam study guide, currently in draft form, is expected to be finalized soon. For new topics covered in the fall exam, the study guide directs candidates to resources that include publications of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. General Services Administration, and the American Institute of Architects, as well as CSI. A new CDT prep course also is in development. More information on the CDT Certificate is available at the CSI Certification Web site.
