September 18 will be AISC’s inaugural SteelDay, where mills, fabricators and service centers in at least 43 states will host 100-plus facility or jobsite tours. Participating architects, engineers and contractors will gain what event organizers note is hands-on knowledge of structural steel’s sustainability, availability, speed of construction and competitive cost, plus demonstrations of how project designs affect production and efficiency. As an industrywide program, SteelDay mirrors events Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute producer members staged for AEC and public agency guests in October 2004–the peak month for recognition of PCI’s 50th anniversary year. AISC’s recently launched www.SteelDay.org portal provides SteelDay 2009 schedules and tour maps.
