In an industry-wide effort to increase the use of concrete-grade fly ash, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association has joined the Environmental Protection Agency’s Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2). Association staff is working on the final draft of long-term sustainability goals for the concrete industry; they include strategies for reducing finished slabs and structures’ embodied energy and carbon dioxide footprint, and increasing their recycled material content.

Greater use of fly ash as a supplementary cementitious material addresses all three measures, while advancing the C2P2 goal of increasing the beneficial use of fly ash to 18 million tons annually by 2011. Working with EPA and other C2P2 partners, NRMCA also plans to increase its educational efforts on the benefits of using fly ash. Other C2P2 sponsors include the Federal Highway Administration, Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Research Service, Department of Energy, American Coal Ash Association, Electric Power Research Institute, and the Utility Solid Waste Activities Group. Information about C2P2 can be found at www.epa.gov/epawaste/partnerships/c2p2/, while details on NRMCA Sustainability Initiatives can be viewed at www.nrmca.org/sustainability/.
