The Tilt-Up Concrete Association has announced winners of its third annual Alphonse Engelman Safety Awards, named in honor of Al Engelman, past president, board member and strong supporter of the tilt-up industry who helped introduce the safety recognition program. The awards, to be presented this month at TCA’s Annual Meeting in conjunction with the World of Concrete in Las Vegas, aim to improve the industry by providing a component emphasizing safety.
The Safety Awards program was refined this year to better represent the diversity and size of companies involved in TCA membership. Accordingly, companies were recognized in the following categories: (1) Best Tilt-Up Safety Achievement Award honors firms with the lowest incident rate in 2007 and index less than 1.0, from six categories [General Contractor or Tilt-Up Subcontractor, Hours <100K, 100 to 250K, and >250K]; (2) Zero Lost time Accident Achievement Award is provided to all submitting companies who achieved an incident rate of zero for 2007; (3) Certificates of Recognition – SNA are awarded to any company whose incident rate fell below the national average for structural contractors, as indicated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics [The rate given for 2007 was 5.4]; and, (4) Certificates of Recognition – IR are awarded to any company whose incident rate improved from the previous year.
