Switzerland-based Proceq recently unveiled Profoscope, a rebar detection device that allows construction professionals to avoid drilling into steel reinforcement, a potentially costly hazard. The product features a scope-based detection interface that combines rebar proximity indicators with optical and acoustical locating aids.

The Swiss-made Profoscope is small, light, cordless, and ergonomically designed to fit in the palm of the hand. Made for one-handed operation, the language-independent interface provides both visual and acoustic indications of what lies directly beneath the concrete surface. The Profoscope looks like a conventional instrument with a large graphic LCD display and selectable backlight that can locate rebar and measure cover depth as well as rebar diameter. Due to special positioning of the electromagnetic coils within the unit, it allows symmetrical triangulation of the rebar configuration, indicating that the scope is located at the mid-point between two rebars or directly on top of one.
