With established footholds in Georgia and the Carolinas, Atlanta-based Thomas Concrete recently became the second-largest ready mixed producer in the Charlotte market, acquiring the ready mixed division of MacLeod Construction, Denver, N.C. MacLeod’s five ready mixed plants and 100 front-discharge trucks increase Thomas’ Charlotte franchise to 13 sites and a 200-plus mixer fleet.

Notes Thomas Concrete Executive Vice President and General Manager Gregg Clark, We have grown from a four-plant operation in a relatively short period. The locations acquired fit our footprint perfectly, improving our ability to service the Charlotte market. [The company] can only be enhanced with the addition of these modern product facilities, mixer trucks, and personnel. Reaching our annual production goal of 1 million yd. is in sight.

According to Clark, all Thomas ready mixed plants and labs are ISO 9001 certified; the new plants are being converted to the Thomas quality system and will soon be certified as well. Their addition is timely since we are starting our journey toward ISO 14001 (Environmental) certification, and they will be included from the start [of that process], he adds.

Although some MacLeod personnel transitioned to Thomas Concrete, the enterprising Bob MacLeod is sticking with his company’s remaining businesses, which include pumping services, finishing, forming, site preparation and concrete accessories.
