POLISHED FLOORS A PATH TO LEED POINTS
At a day-long training session during the 2008 World of Concrete in Las Vegas, certified installers of the FGS/PermaShine Polished Concrete Floor System were informed of the potential contributions of a flooring system to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating points.
With the new LEED training, our certified installers have come to represent more than a team of highly qualified concrete surface treatment specialists, explains Greg Schwietz, president of L&M Construction Chemicals, supplier of FGS/PermaShine products. The information provided to the installers enables them to better advise LEED project teams on how polished concrete assists with points toward energy efficiency, reuse and recycled content, indoor air quality, and other potential LEED credit categories.
The GreenSpec-listed FGS/PermaShine Polished Concrete Floor System provides buildings with thermal mass and high reflectivity for improved energy efficiency, as well as lower initial lighting requirements and long-term energy cost savings. Additionally, the reuse potential of an existing slab and fly ash content in a concrete floor can potentially gain points for LEED projects. Moreover, L&M’s densifier, coloring systems, stain protection, and conditioning products are low-VOC or VOC-free. Û www.lmcc.com, www.fgs-permashine.com
ANCHOR TECHNOLOGY LIFTS TILT-UP
A patented anchor pre-engineered for all varieties of tilt-up panels, the Insta-Brace uses helical technology Û reportedly the first such application in tilt-up concrete. The reusable anchor eliminates the need for concrete piling, product engineers note, as it is simply screwed into position for bracing. When a wall is complete, the anchor is removed.
Created from a design comprising three helix plates welded to a 1.5-in.-square bar shaft, the Insta-Brace Anchor is said by its developers to be constructed of superior-strength steel. The finished shaft results in the strongest helical anchor available, the manufacturer asserts, with 95-ksi yield strength and 130-ksi tensile strength.
While current tilt-up construction practice involves concrete walls poured flat and then raised into position, the Insta-Brace Anchor expedites the entire process, company engineers contend, while allowing quick installation and no curing time. Û www.piertech.com

ABRASIVE-RESISTANT PLATE BESTS STAINLESS STEEL
Surface technology specialist Chromium Corp. announces that an independent study showed Crodon Wear Plate to be a superior solution for handling crushed limestone material. Accordingly, third-party testing by Jenike & Johanson, Inc., pitted Crodon Wear Plate against 304 stainless steel in an experiment simulating limestone-processing situations where liner choice can affect life cycle and flow in bins, chutes, hoppers, and other bulk solids-handling equipment.
An effective liner for bulk-material handling promotes controlled, unrestricted material flow; resists abrasion; withstands corrosive wear; and, facilitates easy handling and replacement, the manufacturer notes. Properly designed chutes and hoppers incorporating liners of a lower coefficient of friction produce mass flow and eliminate common problems such as plugging and buildup, rat-holing, flooding, and particle segregation. Additionally, the coefficient of friction should remain consistent as the surface wears or ages due to polishing or corrosion, since the bin flow pattern could change from mass to funnel flow if the friction increases. Or, if a surface becomes less frictional, increased velocity can result in spillage, damage to other components, and/or dust generation.
The tests used crushed limestone screened to 1-in.-minus particles. Flow measurements were recorded after break-in wear was complete. Crodon thereby was found to wear at rates nearly 50 times better than 304 stainless. Moreover, unlike most steels and steel alloy, the liner is nonreactive to water, oils and most other liquids, so wear resistance is not compromised.
Results also indicated a coefficient of friction 30 percent less than 304 stainless, a low frictional resistance making Crodon a more efficient solution for chutes and hoppers, the manufacturer emphasizes. Further, tests demonstrated that 304 stainless required a wall angle 48 percent steeper than Crodon to insure mass flow. Thus, using Crodon can reduce the need for steeper walls, saving money by reducing material needed for a given hopper volume.
Created via a proprietary procedure that applies a dense, highly adherent layer of abrasive-resistant material to the surface of ferrous-based materials, Crodon is composed of a durable wear surface, a proprietary finish, and a steel base metal. It can be fabricated into sheets, strips or rolled on the inner or outer diameter to unique dimensions as tight as six inches on the radius. Its ability to be formed and cut permits multiple shape and size options, and it can be welded, studded and bolted for quick replacement during maintenance. The product is available in four grades, including Standard, Crodon Plus, Premier, and Advantage. Û www.chromcorp.com
