Recently approved as a U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Education Provider, the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association will present its first related education course, Green Building with Concrete, July 15 at Silver Spring, Md., headquarters. The USGBC Program presents professional development courses to enrich building professionals’ knowledge and understanding of green building theory, techniques and trends.

NRMCA’s new course received USGBC Education Program status after a review of materials, content and instructors. The course provides instruction on how the use of concrete can minimize environmental impact of buildings and public works projects during construction and operation. It helps engineers and architects utilize concrete building systems to design high performance buildings that conserve energy and maximize occupant comfort. The course also provides detailed background on storm water best management practices, including pervious concrete pavement systems in combination with bioretention swales; conventional concrete pavements; and, green roofs to reduce stormwater runoff and overall impact of construction.

The course also provides detailed instruction on how concrete can be used to minimize urban heat islands. It includes suggestions on how to incorporate optimal recycled content into concrete to balance environmental impact and long-term durability. Attendees will learn the details of concrete building systems and pavements, including engineering properties and construction techniques to minimize environmental impact. This course will also help designers, including civil engineers, architects and landscape architects develop details and write project specifications for sustainable concrete building and pavement systems. Specific course topics include:

  • The Environmental Attributes of Concrete
  • Climate Change and Concrete
  • Green Building Rating Systems and Concrete
  • Energy Performance of Concrete Building Systems
  • Stormwater Best Management Practices
  • Optimizing Recycled Content
  • Interactive problem solving break out sessions and a course assessment

Course registration and additional information are available at www.nrmca.org/Seminars. The course has been added to USGBC’s growing catalog of courses and is listed on the USGBC website www.usgbc.org/epp.
