Titan America’s Separation Technologies LLC of Dalesville, Va., is doing double duty on the green building front by inaugurating solar-powered, emission-free electrostatic separation units in a 300,000-ton/year fly ash processing plant. On track for an April start-up at the Tampa Electric Big Bend facility, the operation will feature solar panels placed on the roof of a site management building, yielding electricity for the adjacent separation units.

Fly ash produced in the Big Bend power generation process will be directed through the separation units to remove carbon and produce concrete-grade Class F fly ash. In addition to the site management building and processing facility construction, Separation Technologies has ramped up the operation with a 6,500-ton finished ash silo and 25,000-ton storage dome for the carbon-bearing raw feed.

Big Bend is Separation Technologies’ sixth fly ash processing operation in the U.S. Between North America and Europe, the company has logged 16 installations of its proprietary carbon separators. The latest operation is strategic to Port of Tampa cement distribution, plus Gulf Coast ready mixed and block production, that Titan America’s Florida business, Tarmac, has developed since early 2006.
