Essroc-Crider & Shockey is the fourth sizable transaction in Virginia ready mixed in less than two years. It follows Vulcan Materials’ November 2007 acquisition of market leader Florida Rock Industries, operating 37 plants under the Virginia Concrete banner. Florida Rock netted Vulcan, already a key aggregates producer in the state, a commanding concrete position in northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C.-Baltimore corridor.

Titan America LCC, based in Norfolk and by Concrete Products’ estimates the state’s number-two player in ready mixed production, added to its Virginia platform five-plant Midlothian operator, Mechanicsville Concrete Inc./Powhatan Ready Mix. Titan effected that May 2007 deal–centered on the Richmond, Va., market–shortly after closing on S&W Ready Mix Co., a Wilmington, N.C., independent with 26 plants in the coastal Carolinas. About eight months prior to the Titan ramp up, Burlington, N.C., operator Chandler Concrete acquired nine-plant Marshall Concrete Products, with key operations in Danville and Christiansburg, Va.
