The ASTM C09.49 Pervious Concrete Subcommittee moved toward an early 2008 ballot on a Fresh Concrete Density standard during last month’s Committee C 09 meeting in Tampa. The subcommittee’s second official gathering saw attendance of about 70 and reports by task group and chairmen:
- Fresh Concrete Density (Unit Weight) and Yield. Michael Davy discussed responses on a subcommittee ballot for a new standard and noted the ballot had been withdrawn as some negative responses were persuasive. If another subcommittee ballot passes in early 2008, the standard could be balloted by the main committee prior to the next subcommittee meeting in June.
- Hardened Concrete Density and Porosity. A draft outline of standard prepared by Michael Leming was circulated.
- Field Permeability (Infiltration Rate). Heather Brown discussed details of a new draft standard to test in-place infiltration rate of pervious concrete pavements, plus the results of four laboratories’ testing. A new subcommittee ballot is planned prior to the next subcommittee meeting.
- Compressive Strength. Mark Kurtz presented the high variability associated with compressive strength testing and cited plans for a testing program with several laboratories to explore ways to reduce variability. Following that, a new subcommittee ballot could be had prior to the next subcommittee meeting.
- Flexural Strength. Stefan Bernard provided a presentation outlining the main challenges of flexural strength testing of pervious concrete.
Under new business, Matt Offenberg presented a revised pervious concrete definition to be provided to the ASTM C125 Terminology members for balloting. With 136 members, Subcommittee C09.49 is the largest in ASTM C09, and is chaired by National Ready Mixed Concrete Association Managing Director of Research and Materials Engineering Karthik Obla.
