Titan America business Separation Technologies LLC, Dalesville, Va., is in the final ramp up phase for ProAsh processing at the Brunner Island power-generating facility in Harrisburg, Pa., having inflated a 40,000-ton-capacity storage dome for the low-carbon fly ash product. The joint venture between utility PPL and Separation Technologies began processing and marketing ProAsh earlier this year. An integral component of the PPL Brunner Island fly ash-processing program, the dome completes the three-phase ash-management solution for the utility’s coal-fired power generation plant.

The 120-ft.-diameter, 129-ft.-tall dome provides additional dry storage capacity for ProAsh to increase the utilization of the post-industrial material during peak construction periods. The separation facility is projected to process 400,000 tons of fly ash annually to meet concrete construction demands in markets from New York to Virginia. The processed ash is a major replacement for cement in concrete mixes as it improves long-term strength and increases durability. Additionally, STI officials note, cement replacement with ProAsh reduces carbon dioxide released in the atmosphere during cement production.

The Dome Technology-built bulk storage facility at Harriburg is the third of its kind for STI, following installations at Baltimore and Port of Tampa sites. Separation Technologies’ patented separators are located in coal-fired power generation plants in Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida and Mississippi, plus Canada and the United Kingdom.
