Domestically produced and renewable, it can be derived from any fat or vegetable oil, such as soybean. Using biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine results in what NBB officials note is substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter.
In 2006, biodiesel production reached 250 million gallons Û three times the 75 million gallons produced just one year earlier. Today, 148 plants contribute to the refining capacity in America.
