Biodiesel is a clean burning alternative fuel that can be used in any diesel engine in pure form or blended with petroleum diesel, according to the National Biodiesel Board. Domestically produced and renewable, it can be derived from any fat or vegetable oil, such as soybean. Using biodiesel in a conventional diesel engine results in what NBB officials note is substantial reduction of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter.

In 2006, biodiesel production reached 250 million gallons Û three times the 75 million gallons produced just one year earlier. Today, 148 plants contribute to the refining capacity in America.
