Amid the friendly takeover of Hanson Plc by Germany’s HeidelbergCement, the business of growth continues as usual for Hanson Pipe & Products Inc., which has closed on three deals boosting its Texas and Canadian businesses. In the former market, the company has acquired Austin-based Tullos, Inc., which operates as Texas Concrete Products (TCP). Especially strategic to existing Hanson Pipe properties in Austin and San Antonio, the TCP facility produces thin-wall knock-out boxes, storm inlets, and other precast storm water products. TCP is located on five acres approximately 15 miles south of downtown Austin, and has been fabricating products for Hanson for 15-plus years. It joins the buyer’s South Central region, based in Grand Prairie, Texas.

Up north, Hanson Pipe has become the undisputed leader in concrete pressure pipe and expanded its concrete gravity pipe position by acquiring Canadian operators Hyprescon Inc. and Miceli et Freres Ltee, with combined payroll exceeding 320. Founded in 1931, Hyprescon is Canada’s largest concrete pressure pipe producer, with three facilities located in Saint-Eustache, Quebec (near Montreal), plus Uxbridge and Stouffville, Ontario (near Toronto). In addition to large- and small-diameter concrete pressure pipe, Hyprescon produces Hy-Span bridge girders, gravity pipe, and precast products.

Miceli began as precast producer in 1971, and branched into concrete pipe, box culverts, and short-span arch bridge components. In 1988, the company opened a concrete pipe operation in Mascouche, Qu»bec, and built a second facility in Saint-J»rŸme three years ago.
