The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute is launching Aspire, a concrete bridge magazine aimed at 25,000 federal, state and local department of transportation and consulting engineers. This will fill a bonafide need with our target audience documenting concrete’s distinct bridge advantages and applications, says PCI Director of Transportation John Dick. It responds to the market’s continuing growth, with concrete now accounting for 74.4 percent of the number of new bridge construction and replacement projects. Using August 2006 Federal Highway Administration data, he adds, prestressed and cast-in-place concrete are specified for 38.7 percent and 35.7 percent, respectively, of bridges. When measuring bridges by size and surface area, prestressed accounts for nearly 60 percent and cast-in-place 12.6 percent.

Aspire will cover precast, cast-in-place and segmental concrete bridges. Each issue will feature a profile of a significant bridge consultant, plus case histories and information on trends; and, news from state DOTs, counties and cities that are designing significant bridges. Joining PCI in the venture are the American Segmental Bridge Institute, Post-Tensioning Institute, Portland Cement Association, American Coal Ash Association, Expanded Shale, Clay & Slate Institute, the Silica Fume Association, and the Wire Reinforcement Institute.
