Responding to a rapidly growing need for beds in Florida, Corrections Corp. of America has contracted for the Bay County Jail Annex expansion in Panama

Responding to a rapidly growing need for beds in Florida, Corrections Corp. of America has contracted for the Bay County Jail Annex expansion in Panama and the Gadsden Correctional Facility expansion in Quincy. The $39 million, 150,000-sq.-ft. Bay County Jail Annex project involves the addition of 688 beds to an existing 750-bed, medium-security facility for male inmates. With a holding capacity of 1,430 inmates upon completion, the jail annex complex will be the sole county jail after the downtown jail is demolished.

Oldcastle Precast Modular Group (OPMG) will manufacture, fully outfit (install detention cell furnishings, lighting and plumbing fixtures), paint, and erect the 152 precast prison cells and four shower modules that will make up the housing unit for the new addition. Precast cell production is scheduled for late 2006; erection is slated for early 2007; and, a third-quarter 2007 completion is anticipated.

A 385-bed expansion is slated for the 1,136-bed, minimum/medium-security Gadsden Correctional Facility for female inmates on a 110-plus-acre site. The project will comprise a three-bay dormitory addition and a 45-cell segregation area. OPMG will manufacture, fully outfit, paint and erect the 45 segregation cells, including one handicapped cell and one shower module for the addition. Production of the precast cells is scheduled for late 2006 and erection for early 2007. Completion is scheduled for third quarter 2007.

General contractor for both projects is Moss & Associates of Florida. Taylor, Foster & Childress Architects of Memphis is the architect of record for Bay County; and, the DLR Group of Nebraska has been enlisted for the Gadsden Correctional Center.
