BASF closed on the Construction Chemicals business of its fellow German operator, Degussa AG, last month. In North America, the BASF Admixtures business unit will continue to market the Master Builders brand for ready mixed and manufactured concrete products, concrete pavement and underground construction markets. Degussa announced in February an agreement whereby discussion of the Construction Chemicals business sale would proceed solely with BASF. The buyer has maintained the North American headquarters in Cleveland, transitioning to the name BASF Construction Chemicals.

BASF is the fourth European entity to acquire the Master Builders business. After decades under Martin Marietta, it was sold in the 1980s to a Swiss chemical giant, Sandoz, and from there transferred to Germany’s SKW, which merged with Degussa.

Operating alongside the Admixtures unit under BASF Construction Chemicals is Construction Systems, which spans Building Systems, Wall Systems, Watson Bowman and Latin America business lines. They will continue to offer a full product line for construction applications, encompassing the brands Sonneborn, Senergy, Watson Bowman Acme, ASC, Hydrozo, Thoro, Selby, Ucrete, Degudur, Finestone, SonoWall, Acrocrete, Wabo, Jeene, MBrace, APE and ChemRex.
