Burlington, N.C.-based Chandler Concrete announced last month that its affiliate company, Chandler Concrete of Virginia, Inc., had closed on the operating assets of Marshall Concrete Products, with main offices in Danville and Christiansburg, Va. The transaction includes nine ready mixed plants in central and south central Virginia, and companion block and retaining wall production at the main sites. None of the properties overlaps with Chandler of Virginia’s three locations outside Roanoke.

Formed from Chandler Concrete’s 1998 acquisition of Concrete Ready Mix Corp., Chandler of Virginia will keep the Marshall name for its new properties. Brothers Danny and Steve Marshall will be responsible for the five-plant Danville and four-plant Christiansburg operations, respectively. Joining them are Dan Canada, director of operations, and Nick Thomas, sales manager. Each had held a minority stake in Marshall Concrete since 1993, when the Marshall brothers assumed ownership from their father, Webster, with whom they had built up the company through 1980s and 1990s acquisitions.

Following the Marshall deal, Chandler Concrete has 37 ready mixed plants and an estimated fleet of 300 mixers. The acquisition also strengthens the company’s position as one of the Carolinas’ top producers, behind Cemex and Ready Mixed Concrete, and among the ready mixed industry’s largest family-operated businesses. The Marshall transaction will benefit customers and extend coverage area and product offerings, Chandler officials note. The Chandler Concrete and Building Supply shops in Salisbury and Biscoe, N.C., they add, will carry concrete building and landscape units from Marshall’s Danville and Christiansburg plants.
