During initial construction of the new $1 billion Croton Water Treatment Plant in the Bronx, Schiavone Construction Co. of Secaucus, N.J., used Quikrete’s Non-Shrink General Purpose Grout, bulk mortar, and Spec-Mix silo system to stabilize walls of the main access shaft. Quikrete provided 62 3,000-lb. super sacks of grout to reinforce the shaft tunnel for the duration of the filtration plant’s construction. The grout is being used to anchor several hundred tie backs drilled horizontally into the walls of the access shaft to maintain its integrity.

Once completed, the 380,000-sq.-ft. concrete treatment facility will have the capacity to filter 290 million gal./day from the Croton Reservoir, the oldest of three active systems (Croton, Catskill and Delaware) that provide New York City drinking water. The Croton System provides about 10 percent of the city’s average demand of 1.4 billion gallons-per-day and as much as 30 percent of in-city consumption during droughts.

In addition to the construction of two water tunnels to transport water to and from the filtration system, the first phase of construction includes drilling, blasting and excavation of more than 1 million cubic yards of rock and soil. Construction is slated to run through October 2011.

Quikrete representatives note that their products were selected by Schiavone Construction Co. for the 34-month site-preparation contract due to the grout’s ease of use as well as practicality in application of the bulk mortar and silo system. Affirms Project Engineer Nelson Sanchez, Jr., Superior flowability allows for the smooth progress of our grouting operation. Combined with the bulk delivery system, our team is able to continuously batch large amounts precisely when needed to be pumped around each anchor.

The grout is a nonmetallic portland cement-based mixture including expansive additives specially designed for the grouting of steel columns, bearing plates, precast concrete and anchors. Its non-shrink characteristics allow it to be stable and capable of handling high-load transfers. The formulation complies with ASTM C109/109M, ASTM C939, ASTM C1090, and ASTM C1107 requirements.
