Approximately 4.3 million injuries and illnesses were reported in private industry workplaces during 2004, according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s latest report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number translates to a rate of 4.8 cases per 100 full-time workers, slightly less than the 5.0 rate reported last year. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao says the improved health and safety data once again demonstrates the effectiveness of the department’s three-pronged approach to protecting workers. It includes strong, fair and effective enforcement; outreach, education and compliance assistance; and cooperative and voluntary programs, she adds.
