Congressional leaders join Rally for Roads

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Rep. John Mica (R-FL) and Democratic Chief Deputy Whip Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) were among 10 bipartisan members of Congress who convened with transportation construction interests at the second annual Rally for Roads: Make Transportation Job #1 in Washington, D.C.

Laborers’ prod GOP leaders on highway bill

A multi-media campaign from the union representing plant and jobsite workers across the transportation infrastructure value chain spotlights the public safety crisis crumbling bridges, deteriorating roads and struggling transit systems pose. The Laborers’ International Union of North America undertaking is especially targeted at voters positioned to prod U.S. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) into supporting a long-term highway bill that protects investment in transportation systems.

Unions cheer Court's PLA Stance

The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, Detroit, has struck down the state’s “Fair and Open Competition in Governmental Construction Act” (Public Act 98) curtailing local government units’ ability to exercise project labor agreements (PLAs) on construction contracts.

Romney merits ABC nod

In perhaps the first such move this campaign season by a major national construction group, Associated Builders and Contractors endorsed Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

HUD releases disaster-proofing building guide

Consulting firm Newport Partners in Davidson, Md., recently announced the initial results of a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-funded research project, Safer, Stronger Homes: Protecting Your Risk During a Natural Disaster. The project team created a how-to guide of simple, low-cost mitigation strategies for both builders and homebuyers alike to improve their home performance during natural disasters.
