Penetron Admix compounds commence catalytic reaction with moisture in fresh concrete and by-products of cement hydration. A non-soluble crystalline formation throughout matrix (magnified here at 5,000X) pores and capillary tracts seals microcracks, pores and capillaries against penetration of water or liquids from any direction.

Highland, Calif.-based ProCast Products has completed casting of 30- x 5.5-ft. box culverts for the Woodside Avenue Flood Control project under the San Diego County Public Works. The culverts’ mix design included Penetron Admix, an integral crystalline waterproofing agent dosed at time of batching.

The project replaces nearly 2,400 feet of under-sized storm drain structures. The culverts are engineered to accommodate a 100-year flood, reduce potential flooding to local businesses and residents, and enhance roadway safety around Woodside Avenue. “Originally, the project specified a competitive concrete treatment,” says Penetron Group Director Christopher Chen. “But our partner, GCP Applied Technologies (formerly W.R. Grace), demonstrated to project managers how Penetron Admix would be the ideal solution for this application.”

The agent protects the concrete against deterioration from water ingress and chemical attack, he adds, noting how a green tracer in the bleed water afforded quality control staff an indicator of proper admixture dosing. The culverts were produced over the past six months at a ProCast Products yard adjacent to concrete supplier, Robertsons Ready Mix.

Construction of the $16 million Woodside Avenue project began last year with underground electrical and telecommunications utility line, plus water and sewage pipe work. Culvert installation is scheduled to begin in March 2016, with the entire flood control project completed over the next 12-14 months. — Penetron Group, 631/941-9700; www.penetron.com
