Continental engineers its own breed of bridge mixer

After showing initial, road-ready models at ConExpo-Con/Agg earlier this year, Continental Mixers has formally opened the order book for the Thoroughbred mixer, capable of hauling 10 yd. of concrete under the federal bridge formula. Company engineers bill the model as “a solution that provides the highest stability, productivity, and reliability in the industry” and representing an “innovative approach to the issues of ruggedness and weight savings.”

The Thoroughbred Mixer’s rear lift axle equates to fewer moving parts and simplified operation compared to a conventional bridge-type model with lifting arms. The axle design and Continental’s lightweight mixer drum equip producers in bridge formula states to haul up to 10 yards.

“We are pleased to offer another great option to meet the unique needs of the ready-mix industry,” says Continental Mixers President Frank Busicchia. “We are committed to working together with our customers and chassis suppliers to innovate in ways that are meaningful to the industry.”

“Our customers and their drivers have really been great to work with on this project,” notes Vice President of Sales Rickie Grooms. “The feedback we have gotten first hand from drivers has really convinced us that we got the spec right.”

Configured with six axles, he adds, the Thoroughbred Mixer has better performance off road and on the jobsite than a comparable bridge truck. When backing down a grade, or powering through a muddy track, the truck’s stable weight platform allows the driver to maximize productivity while staying in full control.
