Interstate 94 billboards drive home concrete versus asphalt pavement message

Source: Portland Cement Association, Skokie, Ill.

New “HEY ASPHALT” billboards remind drivers in Minnesota’s Twin Cities how this season brings the Interstate 94 corridor its third asphalt resurfacing since 1993. PCA aims to inform the motoring public that choosing concrete instead of asphalt decreases construction time and congestion over roads’ service life, while representing the best use of taxpayer transportation funds.

“The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness of the long-term durability and first-cost competitiveness of concrete in all applications, including road construction and maintenance,” PCA North Central Regional Office Executive Director Douglas Burns notes in a letter to Minnesota Commissioner of Transportation Thomas Sorel. “Asphalt prices have increased markedly and the application of concrete overlays for maintenance and rehabilitation is being increasingly adopted as a more economical, longer lasting option.”
