Developed by the Portland Cement Association's Durability Subcommittee, Guide Specification for Concrete Subject to Alkali-Silica Reactions [2007 edition, #2PIS415] represents a consensus position on reasonable specifications to minimize the occurrence of deleterious expansions due to alkali-silica reactions. The document can be provided to design professionals for incorporation into project specifications and enables material suppliers and concrete producers to understand tests involved to qualify concrete mixtures for ASR resistance.

A second publication, Diagnosis and Control of Alkali-Aggregate Reactions in Concrete [2007 edition updated by authors Farny and Kerkhoff, #2PIS413], presents current information on alkali-aggregate reactivity (AAR), including alkali-silica and alkali-carbonate forms. It discusses the basic mechanism and conditions under which they occur and provides a guide to visual symptoms and subsequent diagnosis. Also detailed are various standard test methods and their limitations. Guidance is provided on materials and evaluations to minimize AAR potential when designing concrete mixtures. Finally, the publication addresses common questions regarding AAR and cites a comprehensive reference list for further information.
