Targeting architects and precast producers, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute has created a committee that will coordinate the group's various programs promoting and defining sustainable design. The committee outlined goals and strategies during PCI's fall convention.

“For several years, PCI has been working to aid architects in using precast concrete for sustainable design, but these efforts have been spread through all of our committees and staff work,” notes Institute President James Toscas. “This committee will focus those efforts and maximize the contribution we can make in this critical area.”

The committee sponsored several seminar programs at the convention and enlisted keynote speaker Edward Mazria, an internationally recognized architect known for cutting-edge environmental designs and author of The Passive Solar Energy Book. It also hosted “Sustainability 101” and “Plant Best Practices” panel discussions focused on sustainable production concepts.

Additionally, the Sustainable Design Committee is leading efforts to improve PCI-certified plants' environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques, including optimizing material usage; making efficient use of water; reducing energy use; and, minimizing site disturbance. The committee will collaborate with other organizations to research and develop design innovations and system solutions to existing challenges related to sustainable designs.
