PCI HONORS TITANS OF PRECAST/PRESTRESSED INDUSTRY
As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute recognized 50 producers, engineers and others for major contributions to the industry over the past five decades. A selection committee organized last year called for “Titans of Industry” nominations, with judges narrowing the list to 32 living and 18 deceased. Honored at a black-tie dinner during PCI's convention in Atlanta were:
- Thomas Battles, 16-year PCI president
- Mario Bertolini, 1989 PCI chairman and chairman of specially funded seismic research program
- Arnold Brown, 1982 PCI Chairman, who worked on Florida's Seven Mile and Sunshine Skyway bridges
- T. Henry Clark, president of Ross Bryan Associates, long time PCI's Plant Certification Program manager
- Thomas D'Arcy, 1993 PCI Medal of Honor winner and newly designated 2005 PCI chairman
- Robert Finfrock, 1992 PCI chairman, major Florida producer and design/build method proponent
- Sepp Firnkas, developer of standardized residential construction systems
- Ben Gerwick, Jr., PCI's third chairman and piling foundations pioneer
- S.K. Ghosh, PCI's building code representative and seismic issues specialist
- David Hanson, 1988 PCI chairman and longtime Fabcon Inc. principal
- R. Rex Hartrup, 55-year industry veteran, strand system developer and Prestress Systems principal
- Neil Hawkins, University of Illinois, PCI Distinguished Educator and authority in seismic code issues
- Charles Hilgeman, founder of Concrete Technology Inc., Ohio; PCI Student Education Committee chair
- Jack Janney, pioneer in three-dimensional structural models as design aids
- Daniel Jenny, 40-year industry veteran and PCI technical director, who formalized PCI technical committees structure;
- Donald Logan, Stresscon Corp. founder and Colorado Precasters Association co-founder
- Leslie Martin, Consulting Engineers Group and 34-year contributor to the PCI Industry Design Handbook
- Robert Mast, Disney World monorail designer and developer of shear friction design method
- Alan Mattock, researcher of fundamental aspects of precast and prestressed concrete
- Henry Nagy, Spancrete Machinery Corp. founder
- George Nasser, 30-year PCI Journal editor-in-chief
- Norman Scott, Consulting Engineers Group, broadened PCI from a state to national/international group
- A. Fattah Shaikh, University of Wisconsin
- Robert Singer, 1968 PCI Chairman, first chair of PCI Design Handbook and joint AASHO-PCI committees
- Irwin Speyer, consulting engineer served on 15 PCI technical committees
- C. Douglas Sutton, Purdue University professor, TAC and R&D chairman, involved with industry for 45 years
- Maher Tadros, Nebraska University professor and principal author of PCI Bridge Design Manual
- Peter Verna, 1958 PCI chairman, developer of semi-lightweight concrete
- James Voss, JVI president; PCI member partnerships and National/Regional Marketing coordination
- Helmuth Wilden, company innovator in structural engineering; PCI Fellows program founding
- Charles Wilson, Wilson Concrete and innovator in precast concrete for buildings and bridges
- Alfred Yee, Medal of Honor Award, 49 years contributing to many worldwide structures The posthumous Titan awards honored:
- Arthur Anderson, Concrete Technology founder, first West Coast plant operator
- W. Burr Bennett, PCI executive director who helped develop ASCE/ACI prestressed concrete provisions
- Ross H. Bryan, engineer responsible for PCI Plant Certification Program and early prestressed bridges
- William Dean, Florida state bridge engineer
- Harry Edwards, PCI founder, consulting engineer
- E. L. Erickson, Federal Bureau of Public Roads & Bridge Division, initiated bridge girder standardization
- Armand Gustaferro, developed manual for rationalized design of prestressed concrete for fire resistance
- Tadius “Ted” Gutt, former PCI Chairman; expanded plant certification to all producer members
- Eivind Hognestad, PCA engineer who initiated precast research and development
- Kai Holbeck, Canadian who helped create first technical basis for designing architectural precast concrete
- Francis Jacques, represented PCI on ACI's Building Code Committee; created plant operations standards
- T. Y. Lin, industry pioneer, authored first textbook on prestressed; gained ACI code acceptance
- Roy Peck, Modern Concrete magazine editor, promoted prestressed concrete
- Jack Perlmutter, created Colorado's first prestressed plant; helped develop the first double tee
- H. Kent Preston, author of an early book on prestressed design; seven-wire strand development
- Adelard Roy, 1974 PCI chairman, helped create early quantified quality standards
- Tom Thomas Jr., 1983 PCI chairman, created best operating practices for prestressed plants
- Charles Zollman, Walnut Lane Bridge contributor; early promoter of precast methods in U.S.
